GLIMPSES OF BEAUTY
Jonas Mekas is called the Godfather of avant-garde cinema. His movies are like Haiku's: in a natural perfection of symmetry and rhythm he creates mysterious reality, clever allusions and poetic beauty.
In his films you'll often spot The Velvet Underground, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, John Lennon and other artists he was creatively involved with. And if you think Werner Herzog had the coolest accent, think again :)
Could it be Harmony Korine got inspired by Mekas when making this?..

cat's eye
rainy days call for old movies. This classic from 1985 with Drew Barrymore and an angry felin friend based on Stephen King's novel "Cat's eye". So full of weirdness, just how I like it.

ACT DA FOOL
Act da Fool, Proenza Schouler's Fall 2010 collection in an animated video by Harmony Korine.
The whole video is mysterious, never sure if the characters are real or entities from another lifetime.
Korine was inspired by the work of artist Christopher Wool. The video has a oldschool feel to it, as the people at Schouler said "Videos died on MTV when they started to put reality shows on, but now thanks to the internet it can lead a new life" .

bonjour tristesse

Last summer in France, I started to read Françoise Sagan's book 'Bonjour Tristesse' and finished it in one day. I was so intrigued by the 17 year old main character Cécile, who lives the bohémian life with her father in Paris, not worrying too much about the bigger questions in life. Until one summer at the French Rivièra changes everything. When her father's friend Anne comes to spend the summer with them, Cécile doesn't know whether to like her or to hate her, she admires Anne's intelligent, chic side, but she hates the fact that Anne wants to turn her into responsible, young adult, forcing her and her father to give up the frivolous life they're leading for more meaningful things. This causes so much duality in the young Cécile's mind, who loves her father's crazy, eccentric lifestyle, but at the other hand needs some guidance and is looking for a mother's figure.. It's just a very interesting book, Sagan wrote it when she was barely 18 and didn't get accepted into theatre school.. :) I just love her style of writing, it's so honest and light, jet captures the unbearable side of being. the unbearable lightness of being.
Tonight i finally watched the movie! Released in 1958, I was amazed to see that it was an american movie. I don't think it really fits the story, the book oozes Frenchness and the movie is a bit to american if you ask me. Still it was really enjoyable to see the characters come to life.
With a beautiful performance of French singer Juliette Gréco

my girl

"i'm moving to hollywood to live with the brady bunch"
"i only surround myself with people who i find intellectually stimulating"
'My girl' used to be my favorite movie, with Vada who was running around like a boy, writing poems, following meditation classes, being a little drama queen, wanting to marry her teacher and run away to hollywood. I could totally relate to her! I still can actually :)

gainsbourg, une vie heroïque

french moviemaker Joann Sfar, known of 'chat du rabbin', took on the challenge to portrait one of france's mytical icons, Serge Gainsbourg. the movie 'gainsbourg, vie héroïque' will be in theatres end this month.
no.. these are not pictures of serge gainsbourg.. i couldn't believe my eyes, eric elmosnino, is gainsbourg's spitten image. next to elmosnino, lucy gordon incarnates the beautiful jane birkin and laetitia casta is brigitte bardot.

even cowgirls get the blues

It's a crazy movie (and commercial fail) but we like crazy.
Not your everyday sunday family movie. But if you want to learn about free cowgirl gay love, this is your chance.. Sissy Hankshaw (Uma Thurman) is born with very large thumbs.
Not seeing it as a mutation, but as a gift to become a hitchhiker, she travels around the country.
Her trails lead her to New York where she becomes a model for a transexual hygiene products mogul.. (or what else?) For there new product Dew Mist she is taken to the Indians for a commercial in cowgirl style.
When she meets the Mohawk of her dreams (Keanu Reeves) she decides to become a true cowgirl to win his heart. That's where she meets the sexually free Bonanza Jellybean (Rain Phoenix) and "The Chink" (Pat Morita) who escaped from the Japanese internment camps..
The only thing missing are zombies, where are the zombies?
